Mediterranea Belfiore is a canning company managed by three sisters, Simonetta, Emiliana and Antonella Ciarlo, with the help of their mother, Renza.
Donato, their father, established the activity in 1952. He chose to grow tomatoes on the family farm, which gave the name to the company. It is located in Cecina in the province of Livorno, close to the sea.
When agriculture was abandoned by many farmers, due to the low income it offered, he decided to add a small liquor factory to his agricultural activity. This allowed him to build up an expertise that proved to be very useful when, in 1974, he decided to establish a laboratory for the production of canned tomatoes using only traditional recipes and processes.
In 1989, the company decided to go organic for the production of canned tomatoes and this conversion was completed in 1996.
At this point the three sisters joined their parents in the management of the canning company, literally growing in expertise in the family business, and when in 1997 due to health reasons, the father Donato had to stop working, they carried on his work with energy and determination. Donato died in 2001 and they took over the management of the family business.
